What do you call people from India then? I don't think there is a distinction in English.

EDIT: And it totally refers to all American Indians, not just the United States ones. People just know the names of the ones in the South America.
In Spanish we call people from India "hindús" or "hindis", and native people from America "indios". Don't know in English. And we also refer to people from all America.
Finnish also has a distinction intialainen is a person from India and intiaani is an American Indian. Intialainen is a regular construct with the -lainen suffix (eg. Espanja + lainen -> espanjalainen) but intiaani is a finlandization from "Indian".

Lol, at first I read esponjalainen (esponja means sponge) :P

Also, we have the word 'indígena' for every aborigin people, not just from America, to add more to the confusion (I know the word hasn't the same etymology, but people tend to associate the words) XD

That's alkuperäisasukas, so that isn't exactly a problem here.

The notion that Indians refer to native Americans doesn't apply here, because Malaysia has a significant amount of people from India, which are called " Indians".American indians are called native Americans. We very rarely refer to native americans anyway.

"Hindusi" refers to people worshipping the religion of Hinduism - Hinduists or whatever you'd call 'em. Even tough most people from India are Hinduists, the proper name for the inhabitants of the Indian subcontinent in Polish is "Indusi".
TT: I guess one could use those words to describe it.

Followers of Hinduism are just called Hindus.

I think the problem arises from the word Hindi, which,I believe,is used to refer to something from NORTH india.
