Science thread

Post by Vortex »

Here you can talk and discuss things about any science you like: physics, biology, technology, medicine, archaeology, chemistry, psychology... mathematics are welcome, too :P

I myself am interested in the areas of astrophysics and particle physics.

Is that it on your signature?

That's the equation of a superfluid vortex XD

Yeah, I totally know what that is. Absolutely.

Should I rev these engines? Fine!

With the recent discovery of the Higgs Boson how long do you think that we humans will be able to actually do something with it? We found out that it officially exists, but how long will it be before we can actually mess around with it or apply it to something?
Zero is the Past, One is the Future, The Present is nowhere to be found..

Well, to be able to mess with it we have to reach the electroweak energy scales, that doesn't happen in our normal world, so I don't see any practical application in the immediate future. Maybe, since it's the only scalar particle we know, studying it could indirectly apply to some condensed matter research or something, but I don't really know, I don't have enough understanding of those fields.

I love science, but I think I love math more. That is, I like *pure* math a lot more than its applications. One of my more recent life goals is to make a relatively big mathematical proof or discovery, like something to do with the Riemann Zeta function or the Gamma Function (the two coolest functions in the universe). It's too bad that there's not a lot of stuff out there for higher-level mathematics for free ):
