It is my understanding that Germany has so many different names because Germany used to be inhabited by many, many different tribes, and people have generalized the tribe they most often traded with to mean all Germans. There is a similar history between the whole Estonia's name issue in Finland but let's not get into that.

Anyway this would mean that nations near a particular side of Germany or a place they once inhabited would have different names. For instance, French, Spaniards and Portuguese (and Turkish, apparently) have taken the name from Alamanni.

EDIT: Oh, and a funny anecdote; England used to be commonly referred to as Kaalimaa (Cabbageland) in Finnish.

In Vietnamese, Germany is called Đức, which is probably related to 'Deutsch/Tysk', but what's funny is that đức also happens to mean 'Virtuous', so it almost sounds like the Vietnamese are praising the Germans
