Popular culture ignores this,because this date doesn't sound as catchy as the 21/12.Plus,this thing would probablu be forgotten at the end of the year,they reasoned.

Not believing the timezone detail they randomly threw in the last week. When this all started, it was just 12/21/12 or some confusion with 12/12/12.

The fact that matters, we are here and we made it. Apocalypse avoided/over.

No one even said it would ever happen as soon as it was the 21st anywhere! It could still happen sometime later today!
