But its not accepted for essays, reports.
IF I got stuck with this back in my English 104 class earlier this year, all my work would go out the door cause its not the right typeface or some other reason I can't remember.

Another misconception, both Open- and libre office can save in any format, including microsoft ones, it's just not default behavior. I've never seen it have trouble reading such formats either, but I suppose that doesn't change the fact that it has such difficulties for you.
