I don't think the near future will be very different from now. Long ago people thought that there would be flying cars and robots and virtual lifes and all that, but none of that has been popular enough to be developed much. I think people will mostly spend their time in things that they see as having immediate practical benefits compared to what we have now, otherwise they won't stick.
