Well, a lot of the stuff that we know happened in the Subnet sounds like an action film, right? Murtaugh was supposedly shot with a whole bunch of guns at the knot, while he and Elizabeth used their powers – passively or not – and the bullets just did not hit them. Like, how badass is that?

Now that you say it, it reminds me of that scene from The Matrix

wait wait
I thought they just didn't shoot...
They saw how Mur fell to his knees, how Liz came to him and sat down beside him.
And they started talking. No single shoot.
Bullets never reached them.
Or am I wrong?..

Murtaugh never said it was about revenge. But by then he was well used to not being understood. Back then they didn't yet have seven-layer bullets.
The only option was to meet him at the knot. The place where all dimensions intertwined to become one. Then and there, they waited.
And when he appeared, Murtaugh was finally able to see what has happened. He fell to his knees. She came to him, sat down beside him and they started talking.
The bullets never reached them.
The bullets never reached them is definitely ambiguous, but I interpret it as them just being impervious to non-seven layered bullets. Probably since they could be in a different layer than the bullets. Elizabeth knew this so, she just did not care and then explained.
But then... this is all part of the history of the cult and most people in Sub9 and Sub8 were clearly apologetics. So who knows what really happened. I mean, we've seen two answers to "why does this sociopath only talk to Elizabeth", if that is not apologetics, then I don't know what is.
- Your question is wrongly put. You wanted to ask: why doesn't he talk to us. The answer is simple: he doesn't see us. Does that make him a sociopath? Not necessarily. But that does mean he's focused.
- She's the only person he can see. Remember, we're one-dimensional. We're like a drawing on a piece of paper to him. A drawing that was erased, redrawn and erased again. Seven times over.

Sorry to doublepost, but this made me think of something. You know how for the last two or so games Murtaugh and Elizabeth (well, Liz for four) have been pretty unconditionally extolled? Like they are revered and are mostly virtuous. None of the vaguely sad and desperate undertones of Sub7 and prior that were a big part of the bleak Submachine mythos.
I sort of want to see someone who totally hates them again. Someone who has lost all hope.

Well, not necessarily. But somehow I feel like I'd like to see more sceptics of them at least. I mean, I feel as though we're missing on stuff if we're left here with the devoted. Further... I don't know, I feel like the mood has changed so drastically it is almost like a different game? Return to the roots would be a nice finale.

Well, that is understandable, even though he repented and all. And the cult is still keeping that trap up. There are many reasons to still dislike Murtaugh.

Well, not much, I guess. But she WAS important and influential (mother, solver, healer, consoler, etc.) I mean she was mentioned to be the main proponent of Murtaugh and the one who spread his message after his death. That always collects you some enemies. And we've only heard of her more positive sides: some depth to her character wouldn't be bad.

Well, I thing we saw enough skepticism about Murtaugh and his actions.
Even more: I think we are done with Murtaugh.
We must go further.
We must leave Murtaugh.
Now, we must take IT.
Submachine
Thing we were taken by
Submachine: see where it takes you
I would like how people see Submachine
is there cult who hates it. who wants its collapse
who thinks it's God

Or, she and Murtaugh simply ducked. There is that step location in submachine 8. And the result was everyone shot each other.
