I was surprised, too.
Even though I don't think highly of the Catholic church in general, I respect the Pope's decision to quit when he knows he's not able to do his job. Not many people in such high positions are able to do so.

Yeah, what's the point of having the position when they don't have the strength to fulfill the requirements? Either they resign and live out the rest of their lives, probably not in the public eye (as they would being Pope), or they pass while holding the position and they have to find someone to fulfill the position immediately.

It doesn't make sense that he should hold the position if he isn't capable.

Plus, my friend's status on Facebook said that Benedict reminded him of Palpatine, so it's good we don't have the Dark Lord as Pope anymore
