I hope he's not abandoning vector graphics; his technique is very developed and it would be a pity to abandon them now. Unity can allows for 2D gameplay. Check out "Thomas Was Alone." Not only it is a 2D platformer, but its also a kickass story about emergence of... well, I won't say more about it.
